چکیده

To obtain realistic models for propagation channels in future picocellular indoor terahertz communication systems it is necessary to know the reflective properties of building materials found in a typical office environment. The angular dependent reflection coefficients of different building materials were determined using terahertz timedomain spectroscopy in transmission geometry and Fresnel’s equations. This approach is more efficient than a set of measurements in reflection geometry for different angles. Verification of the method with a set of such reflection measurements shows an excellent agreement.

Beating the wavelength limit: three-dimensional imaging of buried subwavelength fractures in sculpture and construction materials by terahertz time-domain reflection spectroscopy.

We use reflection terahertz spectroscopy to locate and produce three-dimensional images of air gaps between stones that resemble fractures, even of subwavelength thicknesses. This technique is found to be promising tool for sculpture and building damage evaluation as well as structural quality control in other dielectric materials.

Direct measurement of molecular mobility and crystallisation of amorphous pharmaceuticals using terahertz spectroscopy.

Despite much effort in the area, no comprehensive understanding of the formation and behaviour of amorphous solids has yet been achieved. This severely limits the industrial application of such materials, including drug delivery where, in principle, amorphous solids have demonstrated their great usefulness in increasing the bioavailability of poorly aqueous soluble active pharmaceutical ingredi...

Dielectric and structural characterisation of chalcogenide glasses via terahertz time-domain spectroscopy

Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz TDS) was used to investigate a series of chalcogenide glasses. In particular, the dielectric properties at terahertz frequencies were determined and correlated with the glass composition. The experimental results showed a strong relationship between the dielectric properties and the polarizability of the glasses studied. A new explanation based on the coo...

Electronic ferroelectricity in carbon-based systems: from reality of organic conductors to promises of polymers and graphene nano-ribbons

Ferroelectricity is a rising demand in fundamental and applied solid state physics. Ferroelectrics are used in microelectronics as active gate materials, in capacitors, electrooptical-acoustic modulators, etc. There is a particular demand for plastic ferroelectrics, e.g. as a sensor for acoustic imaging in medicine and beyond, in shapeable capacitors, etc. Microscopic mechanisms of ferroelectri...

Ultrahigh photoconductivity of bandgap-graded CdSxSe1−x nanowires probed by terahertz spectroscopy

Superiorly high photoconductivity is desirable in optoelectronic materials and devices for information transmission and processing. Achieving high photoconductivity via bandgap engineering in a bandgap-graded semiconductor nanowire has been proposed as a potential strategy. In this work, we report the ultrahigh photoconductivity of bandgap-graded CdSxSe1-x nanowires and its detailed analysis by...
